Why conflicting words can slow color responses.

The original effect

Stroop’s 1935 experiments compared reading color names and naming ink colors when word and ink information conflicted. The classic group-level result is interference: naming ink colors generally takes longer when the printed word names another color.

Why one difference is noisy

A condition difference subtracts two estimates, and individual-difference reliability can be weak even when an average experimental effect replicates. Language, color perception, reading fluency, input method, device timing, practice, and momentary conditions all matter.

Accessibility boundary

The task requires distinguishing red, blue, green, and purple ink. Labeled answer buttons help with responding but do not remove the color-perception requirement. Do not use it when that requirement is unsuitable.

Not an attention or inhibition diagnosis
